Going to bed with wet hair may seem harmless, but it could be damaging to your hair and scalp. Experts explain the potential risks and offer tips on how to protect your hair if you can’t avoid it.
Showering at night can save time in the morning and help you relax before bed. However, according to dermatologists, going to sleep with wet hair can harm your hair health.
Why Sleeping with Wet Hair is Harmful
Dr. Michele Green, a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist in New York City, says wet hair is much more fragile than dry hair. “Wet hair becomes more elastic, weakening its protein structure, making it susceptible to breakage,” she explains. Tossing and turning at night can cause this fragile, wet hair to snap and break.
Dr. Anna Chacon, a board-certified dermatologist in Miami, Florida, adds that sleeping with wet hair can lead to fungal infections on your scalp. “The moisture creates a perfect environment for fungi to grow, which can also spread to your pillow and affect your respiratory system,” she warns.
Tips to Protect Your Hair
Sometimes, going to bed with wet hair is unavoidable. In such cases, follow these tips to minimize damage:
1. Blot Hair: Avoid soaking wet hair. Blot it dry with a microfiber towel or a t-shirt, or let it partially air-dry before sleeping. Dr. Green recommends using products like the Kitsch Hair Towel, which dries hair quickly.
2. Use a Satin or Silk Pillowcase: These pillowcases cause less friction than cotton ones, reducing the risk of hair damage.
3. Apply Hair Oil: Dr. Green suggests applying hair oil to your strands to reduce friction and minimize breakage. Avoid applying oil to your scalp if you won’t be washing your hair for a few days, as it can make it look greasy.
4. Tie Up Your Hair: Leaving your hair down can cause tangling and more breakage. Dr. Chacon recommends loosely braiding your hair or tying it in a loose bun. Use a silk or satin-covered hair tie to keep your hair in place.
By following these steps, you can help protect your hair from damage even if you have to go to bed with it wet.
