Sofia Vergara, known for her role as a judge on “America’s Got Talent,” is naturally a blonde. Despite her fans’ familiarity with her brunette look, Vergara’s original hair color is blonde. This revelation surprises many, considering her consistent dark-haired appearance on TV.
Vergara, alongside fellow AGT judge Heidi Klum, often showcases her brunette locks with blonde highlights on Instagram. Despite her current look, the decision to dye her hair was pivotal for her career.
In an interview with PEOPLE, Vergara explained why she changed her natural blonde hair to brunette. When she first aimed to enter Hollywood, she encountered a unique challenge: her blonde hair did not fit the stereotypical image of Latina women in the industry.
“The way I looked wasn’t how Hollywood saw Latina women,” said Vergara, a proud Colombian. “They expected dark-haired women. It was confusing for them because I sounded Latina but was blonde.”
Vergara’s decision to go brunette was a strategic move that significantly impacted her career. “I decided to change my hair color to dark and that’s when I started getting work,” she recalled. “I thought, ‘Why not give it a try?’ It worked out because I got hired for ‘Modern Family,’ which I did for 11 years.”
Her role in “Modern Family” catapulted her career, eventually leading to her current position on “America’s Got Talent.” Reflecting on her choice, Vergara views it as a minor change that had a major impact. “At the end of the day, it was just hair,” she said. “It wasn’t like I was cutting my fingers off.”
