A Maryland business offers a unique solution for women experiencing hair loss by combining the expertise of a dermatologist and a hairstylist.
Kindred Hair & Skin Center in Marriottsville focuses on helping patients suffering from central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia (CCCA), a condition that primarily affects Black women and leads to permanent hair loss in the crown of the scalp.
The National Library of Medicine states that genetics, hot combs, hair relaxers, and scalp infections can cause CCCA.
Cheryln White, a client of Kindred with CCCA, was unaware of her condition until she consulted Dr. Chesahna Kindred, a board-certified dermatologist.
“Immediately, she could see the inflammation in my scalp,” White said.
Kindred educates patients on treating their hair loss. Dermatologists and stylists work together to diagnose the condition and begin treatment.
“They fall through the gap between what stylists know and what I do medically … There’s a hole in between, and we’re able to really bridge it by having the patients see us both at the same time,” Dr. Kindred explained.
In addition to treating patients, Kindred holds workshops where dermatologists train stylists to identify and manage hair loss until proper treatment is obtained.
White’s hair has started to grow back slowly, thanks to prescription medication, platelet-rich plasma treatments, and steroid shots.
