A barbershop that has been part of the community for nearly two decades has made the shortlist for a prestigious local award. Amaans Hair Salon, located on Great Horton Road, is one of ten finalists vying for the title of ‘Best Hairdresser or Barber 2024’.
The competition, launched by the Telegraph & Argus, garnered an impressive 22,444 nominations from readers via an online voting platform. From these, ten finalists were selected, and profiles of each will be published in the coming days.
Kamran Khaliq, 33, has been a barber at Amaans for five years. Upon hearing the news of the nomination, he expressed his excitement: “It’s very nice, we’re very excited.”
Amaans Hair Salon opened in 2007, taking over a former paper shop. Owner Mohammad Fazzad, 40, started with just one chair. Over the years, the shop expanded, growing from one chair to five. Khaliq noted the growth: “It was one chair, then with time it increased to two to three chairs, and now we have five. He expanded to the next room – before, it was a small shop.”
The salon primarily serves Asian customers, which Khaliq sees as an advantage. “It’s a totally friendly atmosphere, Asian customers, language Asian. We have white and black customers but not the majority. It’s easy for us to get to know each other.”
The number of barbers on staff is also a benefit for families. “We’ve got five barbers, so if a customer has a child, or children, they can get their hair cut at the same time,” Khaliq explained.
In addition to haircuts, Amaans offers waxing and facials. However, Khaliq admits that skin fades are the most popular service. Children often request unique styles like Mohicans, taper fades, and lines. “They just show a picture and we do the same,” Khaliq said.
