Hair and Beauty Expo Highlights the Need for Inclusive Hair Care

by Madonna

The Twin Cities Hair and Beauty Expo made a notable return this year, reflecting Minnesota’s commitment to making the professional haircare industry more inclusive for all cultural backgrounds.

In late May, Governor Walz signed new legislation requiring cosmetology students to be trained in handling textured hair as part of their licensing process. This change addresses a significant gap in the availability of stylists skilled in natural hair care, which has been a challenge for Black and Brown individuals seeking suitable hair services. The aim is to ensure everyone has access to appropriate hair care options.

The Expo celebrated the creativity of Black hairstylists and barbers and honored the cultural significance of their work. “I want to make sure I take care of my crown,” said Tracy Smith, a recent Minnesota transplant. “It’s your crown. We were gifted with this.”

Despite the progress, some people still find it difficult to locate stylists trained in their hair texture. “Finding a qualified stylist is the hardest thing,” Smith added. “For me, my hair is everything. If my hair isn’t done, it’s not good.”

The new state law seeks to alleviate this issue by ensuring that cosmetology students are equipped to work with all hair types and textures. This move aims to enhance the inclusivity of the haircare profession.

Wilson, a community advocate, noted, “It’s surprising that in 2024, we’re only now addressing this issue.” He pointed out that many in the Black community have had to learn how to care for their hair on their own due to a lack of qualified stylists. “Hair is not just hair. It’s about our being and self-esteem,” Wilson emphasized.

Minnesota is now the third state to implement laws promoting a more inclusive beauty industry, marking a significant step forward in ensuring diverse haircare needs are met.
