Google Engineer’s Hair Loss in Bengaluru Triggers Social Media Debate

by Madonna

What started as a few strands of hair on a pillow turned into a major concern for Amisha Aggarwal, a Google software engineer, who recently experienced severe hair loss after moving to Bengaluru. She believes the city’s hard water is to blame.

Aggarwal took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to share her frustration, writing, “I need to switch to RO water to wash my hair in Bangalore, else there will be none left. PS: If anyone is using any water-softening solution/filter and has seen results, please share the link.”

Her post quickly gained traction, sparking a conversation among many who shared similar experiences. One user commented, “I live in Bangalore, where the water’s TDS (total dissolved solids) is 160-170, compared to 50-60 for filtered water. This has caused my hair to gray prematurely. The well water from my hometown, rich in natural minerals like calcium, is far better.” Another user estimated that they had lost about 50 percent of their hair since living in the city.

In response, several users offered solutions. One suggested using bottled water, noting that cities like Delhi, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad struggle with significant water issues, unlike Mumbai and Guwahati. Another mentioned a friend who is developing a water-softening solution for showerheads, inspired by his wife’s similar struggle with hair loss.

Some users shared personal stories, like one who said, “My wife installed a separate water purifier in the bathroom just for bathing. She says it’s the best 8k she’s spent on her hair.”

Humor also found its way into the discussion. One user joked, “To be bald is part of the CTC, just check once.” Another reflected, “This glorious receding hairline was a gift from Bangalore during my college days… I don’t regret studying there, though.”
