In honor of its twentieth anniversary, Strands Hair and Wig Salon in Cranford is hosting a free screening of The First Wives Club on Thursday, October 3rd, at 7:00 p.m. The event, organized by owner Cindy Capodice in collaboration with the Cranford Theater and Downtown Cranford, will raise funds for Bosom Buddies of New Jersey, a breast cancer charity that holds special significance for Capodice.
Cindy Capodice’s dedication to cancer support stems from her personal experiences. After a friend was diagnosed with cancer, she spent decades volunteering for the American Cancer Society’s “Look Good, Feel Better” program. In 2004, she relocated her salon from Westfield to Cranford, opening Strands at 106 N. Union Ave., and introduced wigs, which now account for approximately 40% of her business.
“I have a passion for helping anyone in a medical situation,” Capodice remarked. “I want to make their life easier. It’s a very rewarding profession.” She recalled a poignant moment when a client’s husband expressed his gratitude, saying, “Please don’t ever retire,” reflecting the profound impact she has on her clients’ lives.
Capodice noted that cutting wigs requires different skills than traditional hair cutting. “I was fortunate to be mentored by the owner of the Kenilworth wig manufacturer, Look of Love. Through him, I learned the wig business, and he remains my go-to for any questions.” Many of her wig clients are cancer patients, leading her to connect with Bosom Buddies, a group she admires deeply.
“They are a wonderful group of women—I just love what they stand for, so they have become near and dear to my heart,” she said. With the anniversary coinciding with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Capodice felt that hosting a fundraiser was a natural fit. “It really was an easy call. Plus, it supports a local business with Doreen at the movie theater.”
During the screening, a representative from Bosom Buddies will be present to accept donations. Attendees who contribute $20 or more will receive a complimentary popcorn, generously provided by the Cranford Theater.
