A Look Inside Colonial Heights’ Dominican Hair Salon During Hispanic Heritage Month

by Madonna

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, WRIC-TV spotlighted Rose Glam Dominican Hair Studio in Colonial Heights, where stylists foster community and honor their Latin American heritage. Owner Jackie Garcia opened the salon in February 2020, only to face the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic shortly thereafter. “We were locked up in the house without being able to work,” she recalled, but after three months, she was able to recover and build her team.

Dominican hair styling techniques, such as deep conditioning treatments and the signature “Dominican Blow Out,” are popular in the U.S., but for stylists like Anyi Neidi Tejada, the artistry goes beyond hair. “I just love to do hair; it’s my passion!” Tejada expressed, noting the joy clients experience when they leave looking their best.

Kaony Rojas, who emigrated from the Dominican Republic with five years of experience, echoed this sentiment. “It is the satisfaction with which the client leaves,” she said, highlighting the joy they bring to her work. Garcia emphasized that her salon creates a sense of “home and inclusion” for a diverse clientele, welcoming customers from various backgrounds.

Regular client Liz Miezquita shared her experience, stating that entering the salon feels like stepping into the Dominican Republic due to the warm hospitality of the stylists.

Lina Abreu, a stylist at the salon, noted that the welcoming atmosphere stems from Hispanic culture. “Hispanics are not afraid of challenges,” she explained, highlighting the community’s openness to different cultures and commitment to fostering joy wherever they go.
