Hairdresser Pam Morrissey explains how to manage menopausal hair loss

by Madonna

As women approach menopause, many experience a noticeable decline in their hair’s length, volume, and vitality. This change is largely due to the decrease in oestrogen, a hormone that plays a key role in hair health and growth.

Pam, a leading expert in the field, explained in an interview with RSVP Live how the hair cycle operates. “Your hair goes through three phases: anagen (growth), catagen (transition), and telogen (resting phase, or the hair you see now),” she stated. “When we’re stressed, deficient in nutrients, or undergoing menopause, the third phase can become paused. This doesn’t mean the hair is gone for good—it’s just temporarily halted.”

Pam emphasized that the stressors women face during menopause can impact hair health. “It’s about figuring out what works for you—whether that’s nutrition, exercise, supplements, or even hormone replacement therapy (HRT) prescribed by your doctor. Think of it like putting the pieces of a puzzle back together. Your hair is a direct reflection of your overall wellness, especially during menopause.”

One common concern for women is how to prevent hair loss during this stage of life. According to Pam, while it’s difficult to prevent hair loss entirely, it can certainly be managed. “Premature hair loss can be triggered by various factors. Some women are genetically predisposed to it, and while it may be inevitable, you can bring it on earlier by neglecting your health.”

Pam cautioned that ignoring the body’s needs, especially after the age of 40, can accelerate hair loss. “Burnout and not listening to your body will negatively impact hair growth. It’s important to address stress, maintain proper nutrition, and stay active. I recommend having a blood test done to identify any deficiencies and making the necessary changes to help control hair loss.”

While overall health and wellness play significant roles in maintaining the hair growth cycle, Pam also highlighted the potential benefits of supplements and treatments. At her salon, Sobe Brown, she developed a superfood hair and scalp oil designed to nourish the scalp and promote healthy hair growth.

In addition to her oil, Pam advocates for the use of Omega-6 and Omega-9 supplements. However, she stresses the importance of seeking professional advice, urging women to consult both their hairdresser and doctor for tailored solutions to their hair concerns during menopause.
