Dave Annable, known for his role as Lee Dutton in Yellowstone, recently shared an amusing anecdote about his hair color choices during filming. At the season 2 premiere of Lioness on October 23, the 45-year-old actor revealed that he had to dye his hair while working alongside Kevin Costner.
In an exclusive chat with PEOPLE, Annable explained that when he asked to keep his natural gray hair for Yellowstone, Costner had a different idea. “God bless Mr. Costner, he was like, ‘No – you’re going to dye it. I don’t want to look that old,'” Annable recalled with a chuckle. He took Costner’s advice to heart, stating, “Oh, okay. Copy that. That makes sense.”
Now, in his new role as Neal in Lioness, Annable has embraced his salt-and-pepper look, noting that it suits the character well. “I think it works… It looks doctor-y,” he remarked.
Reflecting on his journey, Annable shared how he initially hesitated to audition for Yellowstone. “I’m from New York. I was on a horse twice in my life,” he joked. However, he quickly fell in love with the cowboy lifestyle and the stunning landscapes of Montana.
Though his time on Yellowstone was brief, creator Taylor Sheridan had another role lined up for him in Lioness. Annable expressed excitement about working with Sheridan, calling him “one of the best, most authentic voices we have out there right now.”
Lioness boasts an impressive cast, including Zoe Saldaña, Nicole Kidman, Morgan Freeman, and more. Annable humorously noted, “You put this cast together and I’m like, ‘Holy s—, this is an all-star team.'”
As he continues his acting journey, Annable’s experiences—from dyeing his hair to embracing new roles—highlight the unique challenges and joys of the entertainment industry.
