Mira Kapoor recently expressed her concerns about cutting her hair during an interview with The Word Magazine. The beauty brand founder admitted that she is hesitant to make a drastic change, fearing it might not grow back to its original length. “If I had the courage, I’d chop my hair super short—into a lob. I just don’t have the guts because I’m scared it’ll never grow back. I also worry about humidity ruining it,” she said, referencing the character Monica from F.R.I.E.N.D.S.
Kapoor’s feelings resonate with many women who share similar worries about losing hair length. To explore whether these fears have any basis, experts were consulted.
Dr. Rema Devi T J, a Consultant in Dermatology and Cosmetology at KIMSHEALTH Trivandrum, reassured that a drastic haircut will not prevent hair from growing back. “Typically, your hair will grow back to its original length unless it was cut unevenly before. A haircut does not affect future hair growth,” she explained.
However, Dr. Devi noted that certain nutritional deficiencies—such as low protein, iron, vitamin D, and minerals—can lead to hair loss. While hair usually regrows after a cut, these deficiencies may cause ongoing issues like reduced volume and uneven growth.
To promote healthy hair, Dr. Devi recommended a few practices: wash the scalp daily with an anti-dandruff shampoo if needed, take a multivitamin amino acid tablet after meals, and apply a peptide serum before bedtime as advised by a doctor. She also emphasized the importance of addressing any underlying medical conditions, such as hypothyroidism, which can hinder hair growth. Regular medical check-ups are essential for maintaining optimal hair health, she concluded.
