The 13th annual Armed Forces Natural Hair & Health Expo is set to take place this Saturday in Killeen, promising a day filled with exciting events and activities.
Organizers have announced that this year’s expo will be bigger and better than ever. Attendees can look forward to a variety of attractions, including a keynote speech by financial expert Boyce Watkins, performances by the boy band WanMore (the sons of Wanya Morris from Boyz II Men), and the R&B group The Whispers. The event will also feature a popular hair-braiding class, a soul train line, opportunities to win a free Thanksgiving meal, and an array of food options.
“Our hair-braiding class is one of the biggest draws,” said Luvina Sabree, the local entrepreneur who founded the event, which focuses on hair care, fashion, and wellness. “People look forward to that every year.”
Another highlight will be the natural hair fashion show, showcasing styles for both children and adults.
The expo will run from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Killeen Civic & Conference Center, located at 3601 S. W.S. Young Drive. Tickets are available for $20 in advance and $25 at the door.
Attendees can explore a variety of vendors offering food, clothing, and hair products. Local brand Bomb Azz Lemonade will be introducing several new flavors during the event.
Boyce Watkins, who holds a PhD in economics and is a published author, is scheduled to speak around 4 p.m., sharing insights on financial literacy.
The mission of the Armed Forces Natural Hair & Health Expo is to promote natural curly hairstyles and support individuals transitioning back to natural hair.
This year, the expo received $167,721 from the Killeen Arts Commission, funded by hotel occupancy taxes. This 6% tax is collected on rooms and meeting spaces in local hotels, as outlined by the Texas Comptroller’s office.
