As scalp care becomes a major trend in 2024, Estée Lauder Companies (ELC) is reaping the rewards of nearly a decade of research. Christine Hall, Vice President of R&D for Hair Care, Color, and Innovation at ELC, explained that the company recognized the potential of scalp care nine years ago.
“We knew that eventually, everyone would care about scalp health, so we invested early,” Hall said. “Our team’s forward-thinking approach has been crucial to our success.”
The focus on scalp health was partly inspired by the growing attention in Asian markets like Korea and Japan. ELC partnered with the University of Bradford in the U.K. to conduct in-depth research on the scalp, publishing findings in top journals and presenting at numerous conferences.
Hall highlighted the revelation that the scalp, like the face, faces UV and oxidative stress, and its condition changes with age, affecting hair growth. This insight shaped the development of ELC’s scalp care products.
Working with Aveda, ELC developed a line of natural scalp care solutions. Hall emphasized the challenges of working with natural ingredients, noting their complex interactions. This effort led to the launch of Aveda’s Invati Ultra Advanced Collection this summer, which includes the Advanced Revitalizing Scalp Serum priced at $57.
Looking ahead, Hall and her team are already exploring new innovations to advance scalp care further. “We’re always working on the next big thing,” she said.
