A haircare expert has emphasized the crucial role of diet in maintaining healthy hair, highlighting that poor nutrition can lead to dull, slow-growing hair and excessive shedding. Eva Proudman, a Trichologist at Absolute Collagen, shared her advice for improving hair health, stressing that protein is essential for both hair growth and strength. She explained that hair quickly reflects the effects of an imbalanced diet, leading to visible signs of damage.
One of the key nutrients Proudman highlighted is Vitamin D, a vitamin many people are deficient in. Vitamin D supports hair health by helping hair stay in the growing phase, stimulating the production of new follicles, and regulating the immune system. She recommended taking 1000 IU of Vitamin D daily to maintain optimal levels, which can help support overall hair health.
However, the expert also cautioned that it’s important to consult with a healthcare professional before making dietary changes. Overconsumption of Vitamin D can lead to harmful side effects, including hypercalcemia, which can damage bones, kidneys, and the heart. The NHS advises that most people only need 10 micrograms (400 IU) of Vitamin D daily, with the upper safe limit being 100 micrograms (4,000 IU) per day for adults. It’s also important to note that children and infants have specific dosage guidelines to avoid potential harm.
