Scientist Links Intermittent Fasting to Slower Hair Growth

by Madonna

Intermittent fasting, a popular dieting trend in which individuals cycle between fasting and eating periods, is associated with various health benefits, including weight loss. However, a recent study suggests it could have an unintended side effect: stunted hair growth.

A study published in Cell and led by stem cell biologist Bing Zhang from Westlake University in China found that intermittent fasting hindered hair regrowth in mice. The mice on fasting schedules showed only partial hair regrowth after 90 days, compared to near-total regrowth in the control group within just 30 days.

The researchers speculate that fasting may induce oxidative stress and hormonal changes that negatively affect hair stem cells, slowing the hair regeneration process. During fasting, the body’s adipose tissue releases free fatty acids, which enter hair follicle stem cells, but these cells lack the necessary machinery to process them efficiently, according to Zhang.

While mice have faster metabolisms, the effects in humans could still be notable. A small clinical trial found that extreme 18-hour fasting schedules led to an 18% decrease in hair growth. However, Zhang notes that the results are not conclusive, and more research is needed.

Despite these findings, Zhang advises against abandoning intermittent fasting altogether, as it offers several health benefits. He suggests being mindful of its potential side effects, particularly for those concerned about hair health.
