Hair Expert Explains Why Drugstore Products May Be Better Than High-End Brands

by Madonna

Many of us have been conditioned to think that expensive, high-end hair care products are the best choice for maintaining luscious locks. However, certified trichologist Abbey Yung recently revealed in a TikTok video that drugstore shampoos and conditioners could actually be better for your hair than their pricey counterparts.

Yung explained that the reason drugstore products often leave hair feeling softer and smoother is due to the presence of ingredients like sulfates and silicones, which are commonly removed from high-end products for “clean” marketing purposes. While these ingredients have been labeled as harmful, Yung argues that they are essential for properly cleaning and conditioning hair.

“The removal of sulfates and silicones doesn’t improve hair health,” Yung said. “Instead, it’s a marketing strategy aimed at convincing consumers to spend more on products that don’t clean or condition as effectively.”

Sulfates are surfactants that help remove dirt and oil, while silicones coat hair to create a shiny, smooth appearance. High-end brands that avoid these ingredients may leave hair feeling drier and more tangled, leading to a lack of shine, smoothness, and manageability.

Yung’s explanation resonated with many users, with some sharing their personal experiences in the comments. One user noted, “Pantene is hated by most stylists, but I had my best hair days when I used it.” Another commented, “Went back to Pantene after years of expensive salon products. My hair looks amazing!”

This insight sheds new light on the misconception that all drugstore products are inferior, suggesting that they may, in fact, be more effective for achieving soft, manageable, and shiny hair.
