The University of Kansas Health System has introduced a new initiative called “Rooted in Change: Understanding the Cultural Differences of Hair Care,” offering personalized hair care kits for patients with textured hair. The program, funded by a STAR Fund grant, launched at the Kansas City campus and initially serves patients in dialysis and Cambridge Pre-Post units.
The kits include high-quality hair care products tailored specifically for textured hair, addressing a significant gap for patients who may face challenges in accessing proper hair care during hospital stays. The program partners with Lenora Leathers, a local business owner of Savvy Salon KC, to ensure that the products are of the highest quality and meet the unique needs of textured hair.
The inspiration for the program came from Whitney Huddleston, RN, Director of Perioperative and Procedural Services, who was motivated by her experience raising two biracial children. “It’s honestly such a blessing to provide this to our patients,” Huddleston said, noting the program’s potential to expand across the health system in the future.
The STAR Fund, established in 2004, helps support patient-centered initiatives, purchase supplies, and fund training for employees, all through employee contributions. The program is expected to make a meaningful impact on patient care by recognizing and meeting the specific needs of those with textured hair.
