A trendy Japanese spa treatment is now available in Kalamazoo, where Sarah McDaid offers a relaxing head spa at Iris House Salon and Spa. Combining massage, hair care, and skin care, the head spa has gained attention on social media, and McDaid’s business is quickly becoming a local sensation.
Inspired by a head spa ASMR video on TikTok in 2021, McDaid decided to bring this relaxing experience to her clients. After extensive research and certifications, she imported a custom-made head spa bed from Japan and launched the service in Kalamazoo. With 15 years of experience in the beauty industry, McDaid specializes in hair loss and scalp disorders.
The treatment, which blends massage, aromatherapy, and skin and hair care, helps relieve tension built up in the scalp and shoulders. Personalized for each client, the process includes scalp analysis, exfoliation, brushes, and a shampoo and blowout.
All products used are from McDaid’s own SOIL brand, made on her botanical farm in Paw Paw. Clients are also provided with a self-care routine to follow at home, and McDaid plans to expand her product line later this year.
Head spa services start at $175 for treatments targeting hair loss, detox, or dandruff, with additional services like a blowout and style available for $180. The ultimate relaxation treatment, which includes a facial, blowout, style, and scalp care, costs $295.
Appointments are often booked two to three months in advance, as the treatment continues to grow in popularity. McDaid has built a strong following on social media, with her TikTok videos, including one with 4.6 million views, helping share the experience with those unable to visit in person.
