Expert Advice on Effective Treatments and Supplements for Hair Loss

by Madonna

Several factors influence hair thickness and fullness, including genetics and stress. However, hair experts recommend various treatments and lifestyle changes that can help achieve healthier, thicker hair.

Dr. Adam Friedmann, a dermatologist at Stratum Clinics, provided advice on how women can address hair loss. According to Dr. Friedmann, minoxidil is one of the most effective treatments for female pattern hair loss, also known as androgenetic alopecia. Minoxidil works by prolonging the growing phase of the hair follicle cycle and increasing blood flow to the scalp.

“Minoxidil reduces the shedding phase, leading to thicker hair over time,” Dr. Friedmann explained. The treatment can be applied topically as a spray, lotion, or foam, or taken orally. While it works across the scalp, Dr. Friedmann noted that the best results are often seen at the crown and top of the head.

Dr. Shereene Idriss, another dermatologist, shared her insights on YouTube, elaborating on how minoxidil enhances the hair growth phase. “During the antigen phase, your hair stays on your head longer, resulting in a fuller appearance,” Dr. Idriss said. She stressed the importance of consistency when using minoxidil, warning that stopping the treatment prematurely could cause hair loss to resume. “It can take months to see results, with an initial shedding phase that may be distressing,” she added. However, after this phase, hair growth typically resumes, and results can be noticeable within three to six months of regular use.

A study published in the National Library of Medicine supports the widespread use of minoxidil, stating it provides significant benefits for patients experiencing hair loss.

In addition to topical treatments, experts suggest incorporating certain supplements into one’s routine to support hair health. A pharmacist spoke with GB News about the importance of biotin, vitamin D, iron, and B vitamins, all of which can help prevent hair thinning. A balanced diet, along with these supplements, is recommended to prevent hair loss related to nutritional deficiencies.

Together, these treatments and supplements offer effective solutions for managing and preventing hair loss.
