HAXBY, YORK — A resourceful salon owner kept her business running despite a major water supply disruption by washing customers’ hair with bottled mineral water.
Caren Vollans, owner of Vision Hair & Beauty in Haxby, took swift action on Thursday morning after learning that a burst water pipe had left thousands of properties across northern York without running water.
Determined not to cancel a day’s worth of appointments, Vollans stocked up on bottled water from local shops.
“I just went over and got stocked up and brought the water across, ready to get started,” she told BBC Look North.
The unexpected outage, caused by a burst pipe, disrupted water supplies for residents and businesses alike. Yorkshire Water later confirmed that water service was gradually being restored across the affected areas.
Despite the initial stress among her staff, Vollans said the team quickly adapted.
“We got the kettles boiled and got started old school,” she said. “We haven’t cancelled anybody. We had a lot of people calling up asking if we were still open, and we said, ‘Yes, absolutely.’ Everybody’s had a nice mineral water hair wash this morning.”
Customers praised the salon’s response, with Emma Hartley commending the team’s commitment and flexibility.
“I was a bit concerned they wouldn’t have the water on when I came across this morning,” Hartley said. “But I did come over because I knew Caren would have a plan like she always does. It’s not ideal, but there’s a real positive come out of what’s happened this morning.”
Vollans’ quick thinking drew admiration from both clients and the local community, as her efforts allowed business to continue uninterrupted during the crisis.
