Hyderabad: A hair regrowth scam targeting bald individuals has been uncovered in Hyderabad, leading to the detention of a man identified as Harish from Rajanayak Thanda, Suryapet district. Harish is accused of misleading hundreds of men by claiming he could regrow hair using a special oil and shampoo.
According to police reports, Harish aggressively advertised his hair regrowth treatment through social media and even developed a mobile app for booking appointments. He promised a complete reversal of baldness, attracting large crowds to a promotional event at Uppal Bhagayat on Wednesday.
The victims, primarily from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, paid Rs 1,000 each for bottles of oil and shampoo at a temporary setup in tents. Harish and his team demonstrated the use of the products, assuring immediate visible results. However, local residents began to grow suspicious as the event unfolded and alerted the authorities.
The Uppal police swiftly intervened, detaining Harish for questioning. Investigations are ongoing to identify potential accomplices and uncover any prior complaints related to his scheme.
A Recurrent Scam: Previous Incident in April
This incident is not an isolated case. Earlier this month, another similar scam came to light when a barber and social media influencer from Delhi, Wakil Salmani, was implicated in a fraudulent hair regrowth treatment at Chandulal Baradari in the old city. Several victims were hospitalized after experiencing adverse reactions to a lotion applied to their scalps.
Authorities Issue Warning on Fraudulent Hair Treatments
In light of these incidents, authorities are urging the public to exercise caution when considering medical or cosmetic claims, particularly those related to hair regrowth. Scams often target individuals’ insecurities about their appearance, preying on their desire to restore hair and self-esteem. Police are advising consumers to thoroughly verify any such claims before making payments or using unfamiliar products.
