Mother and Daughter Team Up to Donate Hair to Wigs for Kids

by Madonna

Mrs. Kirstin Coffman, the Director of Residential Life, and her daughter, Jemah Coffman, a third-grader at MVA, recently made a heartwarming decision to donate their hair to Wigs for Kids. Their selfless act was carried out at Great Clips, where they both got haircuts for this noble cause. Wigs for Kids is a remarkable organization dedicated to creating wigs for children who have lost their hair due to diseases like cancer. What makes this initiative even more special is that these wigs are provided to families entirely free of charge. Crafting a single wig requires between 10 to 20 different hair donations.

Mrs. Coffman was able to donate a generous 15 inches of her hair, while Jemah contributed a thoughtful 12 inches. Jemah expressed her delight at her new haircut, sharing, “I love my new haircut! It is much easier now that I do not have to comb it so much every day.”

The bond between mother and daughter became all the more significant through this shared experience. Mrs. Coffman revealed, “It was so special to be able to do this with my daughter. I have done this ten times before, with the last time being in 2021. Once I explained to Jemah why I do this, she was all in and could not wait to have her hair long enough to donate. Although we will miss pulling our hair back in a ponytail, we know our hair grows fast. We are looking forward to growing our hair out to do it again! I always have sent a note with my donation that says that I’m praying for the hands that make the wig, along with the child who wears it.”

The Coffmans’ act of kindness is not motivated by the desire for recognition but rather to inspire others to consider donating their hair for this important cause. Mrs. Coffman stated, “We don’t want the recognition, but if this encourages more people to donate, that would be awesome!” Their heartwarming gesture serves as a reminder of the power of compassion and the positive impact it can have on the lives of children facing challenging circumstances.
