Debunking the Myth: Can Wet Hair in Winter Make You Sick?

by Madonna

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – As winter sets in, many people are preparing to bundle up and brave the cold, but a long-standing myth claims that venturing outside with wet hair can lead to illness. Is there any truth to this belief?

With the onset of chilly weather, individuals are piling on layers, donning larger jackets, and accessorizing with hats and gloves in an effort to shield themselves from the harsh elements. While these precautions are wise for extended outdoor exposure, simply stepping outside with damp hair is unlikely to land you on the sickbed.

Dr. Kay Kelts, a family medicine physician at the Rapid City Medical Center, sheds light on the matter, stating, “What we found is it’s not exactly true, but being cold can affect your immune system and make you more susceptible to illness. It is advisable to stay warm and protect yourself. However, going outside with slightly damp hair won’t automatically make you sick; it’s just not ideal for long-term exposure.”

The risk of falling ill during the winter months is often linked to factors that were already present in your body. Dr. Kelts explains, “We come into contact with countless viruses and bacteria daily due to our interactions with the world. Even though many of us use hand sanitizer and practice good hand hygiene, not everyone does. We touch doorknobs and unknowingly transfer germs to our face or objects that eventually touch our face.”

When the immune system becomes overwhelmed and can no longer keep up with the existing bacteria or viruses in your system, symptoms of illness can manifest. Dr. Kelts adds, “Our bodies are remarkable at defending against threats and maintaining our health. The immune system plays a vital role in warding off numerous potential illnesses. However, when our bodies are sufficiently weakened, it provides the perfect opportunity for viruses or bacteria to take hold and cause symptoms.”

Therefore, although cold weather alone is not a direct cause of illness, it is advisable to bundle up, maintain warmth, and prioritize hand hygiene to reduce the risk of falling ill during the winter season.
