Billie Eilish Reveals the Unfulfilling Journey Behind Her Blonde Hair Era

by Madonna

In a recent interview, Billie Eilish, the 21-year-old singer of “Happier Than Ever,” opened up about the less-than-joyful experience of her blonde hair era, which she debuted in March 2021.

Despite initially anticipating excitement for the transformation, Eilish admitted that the blonde phase didn’t align with her expectations. “At first, it was fun,” she shared. “I was really excited for the blonde era — like, Blonde Billie is gonna be so cool. But it did not go how I wanted it to go.”

Eilish expressed a sense of disconnection with her new look, confessing, “I completely had no idea who I was. I came up with this whole aesthetic, and I just got swallowed up into it.” Even after returning to a darker, chocolatey shade closer to her signature black, she still didn’t feel true to herself. “I look back at that and I’m like, ‘Who is this brunette?’ A brunette! That wasn’t me.”

The singer detailed the extensive process of achieving her blonde hair, involving multiple rounds of dyeing over a six-week period. She even used a cover-up wig during her performance at the 2021 Grammys.

Despite some regret surrounding the decision, Eilish returned to her blonde hair for the “What Was I Made For?” music video, channeling a vintage Barbie look with the help of wigs. She committed to the role, spending two hours in the glam chair as stylist Ben Mohapi worked the hairpiece into a ponytail.

Currently, Eilish has returned to her edgy style roots, showcasing a black hairstyle with fiery red accents extending from her roots to her bangs in an ombré effect. This bold look made appearances at Lollapalooza in August and the 2023 LACMA Art+Film Gala, where she complemented her striking hair with an all-black outfit topped with a head scarf. As Eilish continues to evolve her style, her journey serves as a testament to the complexities of self-expression in the world of pop culture.
