Locklan Samples, a uniquely adorable toddler, has become an internet sensation, bringing smiles to people’s faces with his infectious charm and distinctive “uncombable hair.” Locklan’s unusual condition, known as Uncombable Hair Syndrome, renders his locks stand straight up, defying any attempts to tame them. The rare syndrome, affecting only 1 in 100 individuals, also makes his hair extremely fragile, making frequent combing a risk as it may lead to breakage.
Locklan’s parents, Katelyn Samples and family, shared their journey with magazine, shedding light on how they discovered their son’s ultra-rare condition. Born with jet black hair that later fell out, Locklan’s hair transformed into platinum blonde peach fuzz, ultimately growing into its distinct upward-standing pattern. Though the color change wasn’t surprising, the texture took his parents by surprise.
Locklan’s story gained attention when Katelyn shared pictures on Instagram, prompting a stranger to inquire about “uncombable hair syndrome.” This led Katelyn on a quest for answers and potential health concerns. Despite the pediatrician’s initial unfamiliarity with the syndrome, a referral to Atlanta’s Emory Hospital and consultation with a specialist confirmed the diagnosis, making Locklan a rare case even for the specialist who had encountered it only once in 19 years.
Fortunately, Uncombable Hair Syndrome solely impacts Locklan’s hair, with the toddler developing normally in all other aspects of childhood. Katelyn revealed that due to the hair’s unique texture, it doesn’t collect oils at the scalp, requiring infrequent washing only when visibly dirty. Locklan’s distinctive hair has become a fascination for those around him, eliciting requests to touch his soft tresses wherever he goes.
