Hollywood’s Hottest Nostalgic Hair Trend: The Resurgence of ‘Flippy Bobs’

by Madonna

In the glitzy realm of Hollywood, a nostalgic breeze is sweeping through, and it’s not just in the air—it’s in the hair.

Julianne Hough set Instagram ablaze, tantalizing fans with a hint of a new haircut. As she hosted the Creative Arts Emmys, all eyes were on her fresh, flipped-up bob—a style that echoed across the celebrity landscape that day.

At the Golden Globes in Los Angeles, Ayo Edebiri and America Ferrara sported a similar flair, a trend also embraced by Quinta Brunson, Carey Mulligan, and Sarah Hyland in recent weeks. These luminaries are part of a growing cohort embracing the cute, short bob cut, delicately hovering around chin length and characterized by a distinctive C-shaped styling with curled-out ends.

“It’s almost nostalgic. It brings a sense of happiness,” expresses Hough’s hairstylist, Riawna Capri, illuminating the sentiment behind the trend.

Detailing the day Hough took the plunge, Capri shares, “The decision was about ‘letting go’ literally and figuratively. During Dancing with the Stars, she kept saying, ‘I think I want to go short.’ Then, one day we did a faux bob for Dancing, and after that, she was like, ‘let’s do this.'”

Highlighting the transformative power of such a change, Capri remarks, “Hair is like crystals — it holds energy. If you have hair that’s down to the middle of your back, that’s whatever’s been going on in your life the past three years, if not more. You’re carrying that dead weight around with you. That’s why there’s such a release when people chop their hair — you’re literally letting go.”

The process of achieving this sleek, structured look was meticulous, taking place over several days and involving around five to six haircuts. The outcome, according to Capri, is a style that is “simple, chic, and crisp,” exuding Parisian sophistication.

In terms of styling, she recommends a smooth finish achieved through the use of a blow-dryer and products like R+Co Bleu’s Optical Illusion oil. Notably, Capri underscores the importance of deep conditioning serums, particularly after coloring, to maintain hair health.

Utilizing a flat iron, Capri crafted the distinctive C-shape, eschewing volume for a sleek appearance. “I don’t want volume. I don’t want the hair to get bulbous. I want it sleek, and a flat iron can help me create that tight look versus a curling iron that would create more volume,” she explains.

As ‘flippy bobs’ make a spirited comeback, it’s not merely a revival of a hairstyle; it’s a release of energy, a declaration of individuality in the ever-evolving landscape of Hollywood trends.
