Queen Mary of Denmark showcased her poise and humor when faced with a minor hair-related incident involving her daughter, Princess Isabella, during a public appearance. The newly crowned Queen, aged 51, and King Frederik were attending a service at Aarhus Cathedral with their four children – Crown Prince Christian, 18, Princess Isabella, 16, and twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, 13.
As the royal family greeted well-wishers outside the cathedral, a video captured the lighthearted moment when Queen Mary’s hand accidentally got entangled in Princess Isabella’s hair as she raised her hand to wave. In response, both mother and daughter shared a laugh, and Queen Mary swiftly freed her fingers. The relatable incident went unnoticed by other family members.
The royal family attended the celebratory service in Aarhus, marking the official transition following Queen Margrethe’s abdication and King Frederik’s accession. The Danish Royal House explained that it was important for the royal couple to be present at events across Denmark, emphasizing their role as the royal couple for the entire country.
A week earlier, Queen Margrethe had officially stepped down from the throne after 52 years of reign, citing health concerns as the reason for her voluntary abdication. King Frederik, now the new monarch, made a solo appearance on the palace balcony, wiping away tears and addressing the cheering crowds. The change of reign was accompanied by a surprise kiss between the new King and Queen Mary on the royal residence terrace.
The royal couple’s eldest son, Crown Prince Christian, assumed the title of Crown Prince, while Princess Isabella and the younger twins moved up in the line of succession. The family’s official portraits, released last Friday, captured the historic moments in the Throne Room after the King’s proclamation.
While the Aarhus Cathedral service marked the first appearance of King Frederik and Queen Mary with all four children since the abdication, the royal family has continued to fulfill official duties, including attending the Danish Parliament’s celebration of the new reign on January 15. Notably, Queen Mary did not need to curtsy to Queen Margrethe during the event, showcasing the shift in hierarchy.
