The ongoing fascination surrounding Andie MacDowell’s hair has continued to spark discussions, with the actress herself addressing the matter head-on.
Clarifying first and foremost, MacDowell, 65, prefers to describe her hair as silver rather than gray, a distinction she deems important. In a recent cover story interview with NewBeauty, published on March 19, she delved into the persistent interest in her hair color.
“It’s fascinating to me that there’s such a level of curiosity and interest surrounding it,” MacDowell remarked. “Moreover, it’s crucial to pause and contemplate this fascination — because it wouldn’t be the case if I were a man. The intrigue stems from my identity as a woman. We must reflect on why there’s such intrigue in my choice to embrace silver hair, as opposed to if I were a man, where it would hardly raise an eyebrow.”
Despite the ongoing chatter regarding her hair, MacDowell expressed her genuine affection for it and affirmed that she wouldn’t have it any other way. She shared with the outlet her journey toward embracing her silver locks, acknowledging that while she had harbored some apprehension, the COVID period afforded her the courage to fully embrace the transition.
“It was during COVID when I finally summoned the courage, as I observed how it complemented my complexion,” she disclosed. “As it grew out, I could envision the final color, and I grew to adore it. I knew the time had come.”
Reflecting on her decision, MacDowell drew inspiration from her sibling, citing her sister’s graceful embrace of silver hair as influential. “My sister fully embraced her silver locks, and she’s only 18 months older than me. I found her radiantly beautiful, and it ignited a sense of envy within me,” she admitted during an earlier interview with PEOPLE in 2022.
As a longstanding ambassador for L’Oréal Paris, with a partnership spanning four decades, MacDowell expressed profound gratitude for the overwhelming support she has received since unveiling her natural hair color. At the L’Oréal Paris Women of Worth celebration in Los Angeles last November, she underscored her appreciation for the positive reception.
“I knew deep down that this was a path I wanted to take. I’m immensely grateful to L’Oréal Paris for their unwavering support and to everyone who has embraced me and my decision. The response has been incredibly heartwarming,” she conveyed. “I’m thankful that people have allowed me the freedom to express my individuality without reservation. It’s gratifying to know that others also find silver hair to be fitting for me.”
