Barbershops hold deep significance within the Black community, serving as hubs for social interaction and confidence-boosting through haircuts since the 19th century.
For Dexter “Flex” Hinton, a Greensboro native and former inmate turned barber, the New Hair Care Center at 1500 E Market Street is more than just a barbershop; it’s a platform for transformation.
At 59, Flex embarked on his barbering journey in 2002 after his release from prison, recognizing the challenges of securing employment with a criminal record. His 22-year tenure at the shop has been marked by a commitment to both grooming and educating his clientele.
“Traditional job opportunities weren’t panning out for me,” Flex recalled. “That’s when my wife and I decided barber school was the way forward.”
Entering barber school at the age of 37, Flex encountered a predominantly younger cohort, highlighting the unconventional path he pursued. Yet, he finds fulfillment in connecting with diverse generations and sharing his life experiences.
Shelton Mcgee, a 32-year-old patron from Roanoke Rapids, NC, attests to the significance of the barbershop as a space for camaraderie and dialogue among men.
“The barbershop has always been a sanctuary for me,” Mcgee shared. “It’s where you come for a haircut but leave with so much more.”
Flex emphasizes the therapeutic role barbers play in their clients’ lives, recounting moments of profound connection and emotional release in his chair.
“You never know whose burdens you may lighten,” Flex reflected. “I’ve witnessed tears shed by those who found solace in our conversations.”
Beyond providing fresh starts and emotional support, barbering offers avenues for self-employment, as exemplified by Kamari Robinson, a 26-year-old barber from Maxon, North Carolina.
Robinson’s journey began informally, honing his skills on family members before pursuing formal training while studying applied engineering at N.C. A&T. Despite the challenges of balancing education and barbering, Robinson remains driven by the autonomy and flexibility the profession affords.
“Success in this field demands dedication and perseverance,” Robinson emphasized. “It’s about putting in the effort day in and day out.”
Flex echoes Robinson’s sentiments, underscoring the importance of resilience and determination in overcoming life’s obstacles.
“Your past doesn’t dictate your future,” Flex asserted. “I take pride in sharing my journey with aspiring barbers, emphasizing the value of education and perseverance.”
Flex’s story embodies the adage that one’s beginnings need not dictate their destiny, serving as a testament to the transformative power of choice and resilience in shaping one’s path.
