NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt sheds light on the health risks faced by Black women due to the use of hair relaxers in a recent report by correspondent Zinhle Essamuah.
In an exclusive preview from the Thursday night broadcast, Essamuah engages with several Black women from Atlanta who have been long-time users of relaxers. These women, along with numerous others nationwide, have initiated legal action against manufacturers of hair relaxers, alleging that their usage led to severe illnesses such as uterine, endometrial, and ovarian cancers.
Among those interviewed by Essamuah, Marnitta Ballard shared her experience of being diagnosed with endometrial cancer. She expressed a profound sense of loss, highlighting how the diagnosis shattered her dreams of motherhood, a stark departure from the fertility typically observed in her family.
