New Study Links Contraceptive Pill to Scarring Hair Loss

by Madonna

A recent study published in JAMA Dermatology suggests a potential connection between the use of oral contraceptive pills and a type of hair loss known as frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA).

FFA is a troubling skin condition characterized by inflammation, scarring, and permanent hair loss. Since its discovery in 1994, the number of individuals, particularly women, affected by FFA has been on the rise, prompting experts to explore both environmental and genetic factors contributing to the disease.

Led by Dr. Christos Tziotzios, Consultant Dermatologist & Senior Lecturer at St. John’s Institute of Dermatology, along with Prof. Michael Simpson from the Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics, the study builds upon previous research identifying genetic mutations associated with an increased risk of FFA. Specifically, the study focused on the CYP1B1 gene, responsible for a metabolic enzyme involved in hormone processing.

Analyzing data collected from women with FFA between July 2015 and September 2017, the study found that those with a particular variant of the CYP1B1 gene were more prone to developing FFA if they had also used oral contraceptives. These findings support existing theories suggesting that FFA results from a combination of genetic predisposition and environmental factors.

In addition to advancing our understanding of FFA’s genetic and environmental triggers, the researchers aim to develop a genetic test to assess the risk of developing the condition.

Dr. Tziotzios emphasized the significance of the study, highlighting its role in uncovering the interplay between genes and environmental factors in FFA. The research was supported by the British Skin Foundation and the Medical Research Council (MRC) Clinical Academic Research Partnership (CARP) award.

This study sheds light on a potential link between oral contraceptives and frontal fibrosing alopecia, offering hope for improved prevention and management strategies in the future.
