Jemma George Hair Artistry, located in Chandler’s Ford, has been awarded the prestigious Best Salon of the Year title at the UK Hair and Beauty Awards. The awards ceremony took place in Birmingham on Saturday.
Owner Jemma George described receiving the award as a surreal moment. She took over the salon just over three years ago, having bought the business from her former boss.
Growing up on a council estate and battling imposter syndrome, Jemma never expected such a win. She said, “When I bought the salon during lockdown, I wanted to completely change it and make it my own. I definitely suffer from imposter syndrome and feel like I am never doing enough. This win has made me take a step back and appreciate how far I have come.”
Reflecting on her journey, she added, “I grew up on a council estate and didn’t have money, so I have worked hard. Everything I have done; I have done myself.”
Jemma also mentioned the rigorous entry process for the awards, noting that judges closely examine the answers and evidence provided in submissions.
She entered the competition to boost team morale but never imagined they would win. Now, Jemma and her team of six are recognized as the best in the UK, and she plans to make the most of this title over the next year.
Jemma expressed her amazement, saying, “It is a surreal moment to be recognised for your hard work and effort, which is amazing. I was in complete shock when we won as there were thousands of entries and hundreds of people at the finals.”
She enjoys taking her employees to such events for team bonding and did not expect to win. This year’s event was significantly larger than last year’s, with many more applicants.
Jemma concluded, “I love what I do and I love employing people in my salon.”
