Fantasy hairpieces take center stage at Hair Wars

by Madonna

Detroit, known as the Hair Capital of the World, will host the ultimate hair extravaganza this Saturday at the Hair Wars Party & Strolling Hair Show.

David “Hump the Grinder” Humphries, the founder of Hair Wars, started the event in 1982 during his days as a DJ and promoter in Detroit clubs. He noticed hairstylists needed a platform to showcase their creativity, so he began integrating hair shows into his nightlife events. Over time, what started as a four-week experiment became a permanent fixture, drawing in hair enthusiasts from all over due to Detroit’s bold and innovative hair culture.

Today, Hair Wars has evolved into a national tour, but Humphries aims to return to its roots with this year’s event: a celebration within the party scene.

The event will feature three distinct parties in one night. It kicks off with the “Hair Wars Reunion Day Party” at 6:05 p.m., followed by the “Pop-up Strolling Hair Show” at sunset, and concludes with “The After Party.”

“This year, we’re going back to our beginnings, making it more about the party and showcasing fantasy hair. Everyone can go all out,” Humphries explained.

Hair Wars is renowned for its jaw-dropping displays. Humphries fondly recalls one of his favorites by Little Willie, which featured a hairpiece that “unzipped” to reveal a live python.

“We’ve seen it all – from birds to champagne – but that python was unforgettable,” he remarked.

Seven hair entertainers, including the Creative Hair School of Cosmetology from Flint, along with local talents, will present their extravagant styles at this year’s event. Themes range from sports tributes to outfits crafted entirely from hair, promising a night of surprises.

As for what attendees can expect, Humphries teased, “I have no idea what they’ll come up with. They keep their creations under wraps.”

He encourages guests to unleash their creativity with their own hairdos. “We want everyone to dress wild and feel at home,” he added. “It’s all about being yourself.”

The event’s start time, 6:05 p.m., remains a deliberate choice for Humphries, intended to spark conversation and curiosity.

In addition to the Strolling Hair Show, Hair Wars will feature two sound stages with live DJs and a fire performer, promising an electrifying evening for all attendees.
