Weight-loss drugs are becoming increasingly popular, with advertisements flooding the airwaves on radio, TV, and even NewsChannel 7. But alongside the benefits, a concerning side effect is emerging: hair loss.
Dr. Stephen Lewellis from ‘Above and Beyond Dermatology’ appeared live on NewsChannel 7 at 4 p.m. to discuss both the positive and negative impacts of these widely used medications.
According to Dr. Lewellis, many patients who seek help for hair loss are taking weight-loss drugs. He explained that this link makes sense because these medications suppress appetite, leading people to eat less. As a result, they may not get enough nutrients, causing rapid changes in the body that can trigger hair loss.
Dr. Lewellis advised that anyone experiencing hair loss while on weight-loss medication should consult their primary care provider or a board-certified dermatologist to find the best approach for their health.
He also recommended that healthcare providers inform patients about the potential risk of hair loss before prescribing these medications.
