Nicole Sukel’s journey into cosmetology was a natural progression, encouraged by her friends and family who recognized her innate talent. That encouragement led to a flourishing 26-year career as a stylist, culminating in the launch of her own business. But it wasn’t just any business. In 2018, Sukel opened Salon Seva in Charleroi, a place that’s become far more than just a hair salon.
Sukel recalls the pivotal moment when she and her husband decided to embark on the entrepreneurial journey together. “I was 20 years in and ready to start something new, and we said, ‘Let’s do it,’” she says. This leap of faith resulted in a welcoming, zen-like space where clients can enjoy a full suite of self-care services—from hair coloring and cuts to brow lamination, tint, and manicures. More recently, the addition of an esthetician expanded Salon Seva’s offerings to include skin care services, making it a true one-stop shop for beauty and wellness.
However, the services aren’t the only thing that keeps clients coming back. The salon has created an environment where clients feel genuinely comfortable. “The biggest compliment I ever receive is how comfortable people are here,” Sukel shares. “They don’t feel like they have to be dressed up or have their hair done to get their hair done. It’s comfortable, zen, and just a good space here.”
The salon’s inviting atmosphere fosters a deeper connection between the team and their clients, many of whom have become close friends. Sukel emphasizes how much more personal the stylist-client relationship is than people might assume. “I think we’re often life coaches and psychologists,” she says, reflecting on the many personal stories and challenges her clients share with her. This realization prompted Sukel to become a certified life coach, further enhancing the emotional support she provides to her clientele.
“Our relationships are deeper. They’re often looking for guidance whether it’s a problem at work or even something as small as what they’re having for dinner. We’re a sounding board,” Sukel adds. She cherishes the bonds she’s built with clients, many of whom she now considers family or close friends.
While Sukel initially envisioned a large staff and a bustling business, her experiences have led her to appreciate the benefits of a smaller, close-knit team. “At first, my husband and I were working on getting the salon open in under three months. I wasn’t sure what I wanted, but over the years, I’ve discovered that it’s much better to have a small and happy group than a lot of people and chaos,” she reflects.
Now, four years into Salon Seva’s success, Sukel is content with the balance she’s achieved between her personal and professional life. “I could do this for another 20 years,” she says. “I have achieved so much more than I ever thought I would, and I’m happy where I’m at. Will I go for more? Maybe, but for right now, I’m good.”
Salon Seva is more than a salon; it’s a sanctuary where clients not only receive beauty treatments but also feel supported, understood, and at home. Sukel’s vision and passion have transformed it into a place that provides far more than hair care.
