RTÉ Today host Dáithí Ó Sé has been instructed by broadcasting bosses to stop promoting the hair transplant procedure he underwent after becoming a brand ambassador for a clinic in Kerry. The 47-year-old presenter, who has openly expressed his satisfaction with his new look, now faces restrictions on discussing the procedure across any RTÉ channels, including podcasts.
Ó Sé previously described his decision to undergo the transplant, which reportedly cost around €8,000, as “the best decision I ever made.” However, following his public endorsement of the clinic, RTÉ executives have stepped in, banning him from mentioning the procedure on the broadcaster’s platforms, including during appearances on shows like Oliver Callan’s slot.
Speaking to The Irish Sun, Dáithí confirmed that he was initially told he could not mention the transplant on his own show, but it was only later that he was informed the ban extended to all RTÉ media. “I was on the understanding that I couldn’t speak about it on my own show… But it was mentioned to me after that I couldn’t talk about it on any other RTÉ platforms either,” he explained. “I told RTÉ, ‘Yes, if I know the rules, I will stick by them.'”
The decision to restrict Ó Sé’s promotional mentions comes after accusations that he was providing free advertising for the clinic during his appearances on RTÉ. The presenter also revealed that there was initial reluctance from the broadcaster when he first sought approval for the endorsement, though he eventually received permission.
Ó Sé, who is not a full-time staff member of RTÉ, clarified that he works on an eight-month contract, underscoring his more limited commitment to the broadcaster. Despite the ban, he has accepted the new guidelines, stating that he will adhere to the rules moving forward.
