Actor Cheyenne Jackson has revealed his long-hidden struggle with hair loss, sharing that he has undergone five hair transplant surgeries over the past 14 years. The 44-year-old star, known for his roles in American Horror Story and 30 Rock, took to Instagram on Saturday to open up about his journey, describing it as a “horrible secret” he had kept for years.
Jackson disclosed that he first began losing his hair at the age of 22, and at 28, he underwent his first hair transplant. In his emotional post, he explained that the visible scar on his head was not the result of a dramatic medical emergency, but from the multiple surgeries he had to reverse his hair loss. “The day when my horrible secret would be revealed,” Jackson wrote, expressing relief and trepidation about sharing his truth.
Over the years, Jackson kept his surgeries private, revealing that each time he joined a new set, he would confide in the hair and makeup team about his secret. However, he noted that the teams often didn’t react as strongly as he expected, reflecting his own internalized shame. “No one cared but me,” he admitted.
The actor also credited his brother, who faced similar hair loss but took a different approach by simply shaving his head. Jackson acknowledged that while his brother was “way braver and cooler,” his own journey involved continued procedures as he prayed that no one would notice.
In his post, Jackson expressed his desire to break free from the “shame and fear” surrounding his hair loss, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. By sharing his story now, he hopes to inspire others to embrace their own insecurities. “Maybe this will inspire someone out there to share a secret they’ve been hiding or show a scar they’ve been afraid of anyone seeing,” he wrote.
Among those who supported Jackson were designer Marc Jacobs, who shared his own experiences with hair transplants, and many fans who expressed admiration for Jackson’s courage in revealing such a personal aspect of his life.
The actor also explained that he is sharing his story as a way to set an example for his young children, twins Ethan and Willow, whom he shares with husband Jason Landau. “I’m trying to teach my kids to accept themselves and to be proud of who they are,” Jackson said, adding, “As their father, the example should start with me. This is that. I’ll go first.”
Through his candid post, Jackson hopes to encourage others to embrace their authentic selves and let go of the fear of judgment.
