In Maria, Pablo Larraín’s biographical film about the iconic opera singer Maria Callas, Angelina Jolie undergoes a remarkable transformation, thanks to the expert work of her personal makeup and hair team, Adruitha Lee and Pamela Goldammer.
While the key to Jolie’s transformation lay in subtlety, Lee and Goldammer worked meticulously to capture the essence of Callas. “You do have to look at the whole of [Callas] to understand her, or how she was adapting,” Jolie explains, reflecting on the team’s thoughtful approach to recreating Callas’ distinctive look.
Maria Callas, known for her impeccable style, was never seen without flawless makeup or perfectly styled hair. The team drew inspiration from various images of the opera legend, but one particular photograph left a lasting impact on Jolie. “In one shot, Callas is hunched over, wearing large glasses, and her hair is perfectly done. She looks like she was caught in an intimate, vulnerable moment,” Jolie recalls. This image helped to shape the visual portrayal of Callas, balancing both her public persona and private life on screen.
Through precision and care, Lee and Goldammer crafted a look that honors Callas’ legacy while allowing Jolie to embody the opera star’s spirit and character in a way that feels both authentic and respectful.
