Regular visits to the hair salon are key for maintaining healthy hair, but experts say at-home habits are just as crucial. Dermatologist Dr. Daniel Sugai recently shared on TikTok the common hair care mistakes that could be damaging your tresses, with a focus on a particular hairstyle that may be causing hair loss.
Dr. Sugai warned that tight hairstyles can lead to traction alopecia, a form of hair loss caused by constant pulling, which can result in permanent damage and even bald patches. The British Skin Foundation has also highlighted the risks associated with this type of hair loss.
A key contributor to traction alopecia, according to Dr. Sugai, is the use of certain hair ties. He specifically cautioned against using clear elastic bands, which many people use to pull back their hair. “These rubber bands are so traumatising and can cause hair loss as well,” he explained.
However, this doesn’t mean women need to wear their hair down to avoid damage. Dr. Sugai emphasized the importance of using the right hair accessories. He recommended opting for soft scrunchies that are gentler on hair, instead of rubber bands that can cause unnecessary tension and breakage.
In addition to avoiding tight hairstyles, Dr. Sugai also provided tips for managing hair health when using heat styling tools. He warned against using a hairdryer on its highest heat setting, as the intense heat can cause significant damage. “When you put a heat source on wet hair, steam bubbles form in the hair shaft, leading to increased breakage,” he said.
The same caution applies to using straighteners on wet hair. Dr. Sugai urged people to wait until their hair is completely dry before using heat-styling tools to prevent unnecessary breakage.
By making these simple adjustments, Dr. Sugai suggests individuals can protect their hair from damage and maintain healthier, stronger locks.
