US Health Authorities Warn of Cancer Risk from Hair Straightening Products

by Madonna

US health authorities have issued a troubling warning about formaldehyde, a chemical commonly found in hair straightening products, highlighting its serious health risks, including cancer.

Formaldehyde, also known as formalin or methylene glycol, is widely used in industries such as textiles and construction. According to a recent investigation by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), prolonged exposure to this substance increases the risk of cancer, respiratory issues, and other health problems.

The chemical is often combined with keratin in hair treatments. When heat is applied to the hair during styling, formaldehyde gas is released into the air, which can be inhaled by those nearby. The gas may cause eye irritation and respiratory discomfort, but long-term exposure is linked to more serious health conditions, including cancer.

The EPA’s warning emphasizes the risks of formaldehyde exposure in poorly ventilated spaces. In addition to hair products, formaldehyde can also be found in furniture and toys, with potential long-term exposure if these items release the gas over time.

While the EPA did not specifically name hair products, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has acknowledged the connection between formaldehyde and hair straightening treatments. Workers exposed to these products without proper safety measures are also at heightened risk.
