Amika Recalls Shampoo Due to Bacterial Contamination Risk

by Madonna

Amika has initiated a voluntary recall of its Mirrorball High Shine + Protect Antioxidant Shampoo following concerns about a potential microbiological risk. The recall affects Mirrorball shampoos from 2023 and 2024, which failed to meet the brand’s stringent quality standards. The issue was identified after feedback regarding a change in the product’s odor and, in rare cases, temporary irritation.

In a statement, Amika clarified that while no serious health incidents have been reported, the presence or potential presence of the bacterium P. gergoviae in the affected batches posed a risk. This bacterium can cause temporary irritation and has been associated with more severe infections in individuals with weakened immune systems. Retailers including TKmaxx, Sephora, and Cult Beauty have also pulled the product from shelves.

Amika urges customers to stop using the product immediately, even if it appears unaffected by odor or quality changes. The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) highlighted the potential risks posed by the bacterium, particularly for those with compromised immune systems. The brand assures that no other Amika products are involved in the recall.
