A recent statement by social media influencer Alix Earle has sparked a viral debate over drugstore shampoo and conditioner products. Earle claimed her hair felt “softer than ever” after using expired Pantene products, igniting widespread opinions about the effectiveness and quality of affordable hair care options.
Certified trichologist Abbey Yung (@abbeyyung) joined the discussion on TikTok, claiming that much of what people have been told about drugstore hair products is misleading. In a post that gained 305,500 likes and 5.3 million views, Yung criticized the trend of marketing products as “sulfate-free,” explaining that many brands removed essential softening and cleansing agents to capitalize on the negative reputation sulfates gained in the industry.
The debate quickly intensified, with some users defending drugstore shampoos, while others criticized them. One commenter, a former stylist, shared concerns about “waxy buildup” often seen in clients using drugstore brands, claiming it interfered with coloring treatments.
Hair transplant surgeon Dr. Ross Kopelman offered his perspective, acknowledging that drugstore products are formulated to deliver instant results. “They contain conditioning agents, silicones, and other smoothing ingredients that make hair feel softer and shinier right away,” he said. While this effect may be noticeable, Dr. Kopelman emphasized that for individuals with healthy hair and scalp, it may not pose a problem. However, he pointed out that those dealing with thinning hair, hair loss, or scalp issues need products that address the underlying causes of these concerns.
Yung also touched on the growing popularity of sulfate- and silicone-free products, noting how these trends have influenced consumer expectations and shaped the haircare market.
The debate continues, with beauty enthusiasts and experts alike offering varying opinions on the merits and drawbacks of drugstore haircare products.
