The £8 Shampoo Dermatologists Recommend for Fighting Hair Loss

by Madonna

If you’re noticing thinning hair, an £8 bottle of shampoo might just be the solution, according to dermatologists. Nizoral, typically known for its anti-dandruff properties, could be an effective remedy for hair loss as well. Dr. Amana Adel, a skin expert, shared with her 1.7 million TikTok followers that this shampoo does more than tackle dandruff — it may also help with acne and hair thinning.

Nizoral contains ketoconazole, an anti-fungal ingredient that not only combats the fungus responsible for dandruff but also promotes hair regrowth. Studies show that it helps reduce scalp inflammation, which can harm hair follicles and contribute to hair loss.

A 2019 study indicated that ketoconazole may be as effective at reducing hair loss as other common treatments like minoxidil (Regaine), which can cost £15-£35 per bottle. Ketoconazole also works by preventing the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone linked to hair loss and thinning.

While some types of hair loss, like male and female pattern baldness, are permanent, others caused by stress or illness can be temporary. However, there are some drawbacks to using Nizoral. Dermatologist Dr. Neera Nathan from Massachusetts mentioned that the shampoo can leave hair feeling extremely dry. To combat this, she recommends using coconut oil in conjunction with the shampoo.

Coconut oil, known for its ability to penetrate the hair shaft and protect it from moisture loss, should be applied to the hair 30 minutes before shampooing. Dr. Nathan suggests massaging the oil into the ends of the hair and working your way up to the roots, followed by washing with Nizoral, focusing on the scalp. Leave the shampoo on for 2–3 minutes before rinsing and conditioning as usual.

This simple routine may promote hair growth and even help regrow bald spots without drying out your hair. However, if you experience abnormal hair loss, such as bald patches or excessive shedding, it’s important to consult with your GP or dermatologist for further advice.
