Embracing grey hair doesn’t mean sacrificing shine. Here’s how you can make your greys look radiant and healthy.
If you’re planning to go grey, or have already started, a little preparation can make the transition easier. “Growing out grey hair can feel overwhelming,” says hairstylist Nicole Pidherny. “The best tip is to book a consultation with your stylist to set goals, manage expectations, and discuss options.”
Grey hair can be blended with highlights or lowlights for added depth and vibrancy. Demi-permanent dye helps create a smooth, blended look and reduces noticeable regrowth.
Whether you’re going grey naturally or with professional help, Pidherny emphasizes the importance of a healthy hair-care routine. “Grey hair can often look dull,” she says, “and dullness is the number one complaint when people don’t feel their best with their hair.”
Scalp care is key to enhancing shine. Pidherny explains that grey hair tends to be wiry or coarse, so moisturized hair follicles will help it remain soft and manageable. “Hydrate your scalp with a serum containing niacinamide three times a week after shampooing,” she advises. Niacinamide strengthens the scalp’s microbiome and nourishes the hair bulb. Massaging the serum in helps stimulate blood flow for healthier hair.
Look for products with hyaluronic acid, a common ingredient in skincare that is also great for retaining moisture in hair. Peptides, which help repair hair from the inside, are expected to grow in popularity soon.
Incorporating a weekly treatment, such as a hair mask or liquid gloss, will keep your hair conditioned and shiny. Pidherny also recommends applying a leave-in cream or hair oil daily for the best results. Hydrated grey hair is less likely to yellow, giving you a healthier, shinier mane.
