While glycolic acid is commonly known for its skin benefits, it may also be a game-changer for hair growth. According to Waleed Taleb, CMO of Vera Clinic, glycolic acid can work wonders when applied to the scalp to promote healthier, stronger hair.
Glycolic acid, a water-soluble hydroxy acid derived from sugar cane, is a chemical exfoliant that helps cleanse the scalp. It removes dead skin cells, excess oils, and product buildup, all of which can clog hair follicles. By doing so, it creates an optimal environment for hair growth.
In addition to stimulating hair growth, glycolic acid is also known for its anti-inflammatory properties, which can help reduce scalp irritation.
To use glycolic acid for hair health, Waleed recommends massaging it into your scalp and leaving it on for 10 to 30 minutes. It’s essential to follow up with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner to ensure your scalp stays hydrated. For beginners, start with a concentration of 5% to 10%, and use it no more than once or twice a week to avoid irritation or chemical burns.
While research is still ongoing, experts from the Harley Street Hair Clinic suggest that glycolic acid’s exfoliating, hydrating, and anti-inflammatory properties make it a promising ingredient for maintaining scalp health and encouraging hair growth.
