There is ongoing debate about how often to wash your hair, with many people opting to do so when their hair looks greasy or there’s noticeable product buildup. However, an expert has emphasized the importance of “striking a balance” when it comes to washing your hair.
Dr. Bawli, a leading hair surgeon at Elithair, explained to GB News that while washing your hair daily may seem tempting, it’s not advisable. He noted, “While it’s easy to wash your hair as soon as it feels dirty, it’s crucial to find a balance between cleansing your scalp to remove dirt and buildup, and not stripping your hair of its natural oils.”
Dr. Bawli recommends washing your hair no more than two to three times a week. Over-washing can strip your hair of its natural oils, leaving it dry and lackluster, while washing too infrequently can lead to buildup and a lack of shine.
While some people may need to wash their hair daily due to specific factors like hair type, humidity, or physical activity, Dr. Bawli generally advises against this. For those who feel their hair gets greasy quickly, he suggests using a clarifying shampoo once every couple of weeks for a deeper cleanse.
He added, “Using a clarifying shampoo can help clean your scalp more thoroughly, allowing you to go longer between washes, especially if you find yourself washing more frequently than two to three times a week.”
For those looking to freshen up without over-washing, Dr. Bawli also recommends rinsing hair without shampoo. This can help maintain cleanliness without drying out the hair, which could otherwise lead to breakage, split ends, or hair loss.
