As people invest in anti-aging skin care products to address fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots, the same care should be extended to their hair. Just like skin, hair ages with time and requires dedicated attention to maintain its health and appearance.
Courtney Foster, a professional hairstylist, highlights the importance of recognizing that hair, like skin, experiences the aging process. “Your hair, nails, and skin are made up of the same components, but when we think about anti-aging, we just think about skin. We don’t consider that your hair ages as well,” Foster explains.
As we age, hair typically loses shine, elasticity, and volume. While many may be tempted to buy every product that promises to fix these issues, stylists recommend addressing your overall health and habits first.
Kasey Bertucci, a hairstylist at Salon 120 West, advises starting with hydration. Ensuring you drink enough water each day—about 11 cups, as recommended by the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine—is key to maintaining healthy hair. Sleep is equally important, with the National Sleep Foundation recommending seven to nine hours per night to help prevent stress-induced hair loss.
Rita Sanders, owner and stylist at Tousled Hair Salon in Jersey City, New Jersey, suggests a simple yet effective way to care for your hair overnight. Using satin pillowcases reduces friction while you sleep, preventing hair from tangling or drying out from the products you used earlier in the day.
Excessive shampooing is another common mistake that can lead to hair damage. Bertucci advises against over-washing and brushing your hair, as these actions can contribute to excess hair loss. Instead, she recommends shampooing “as often as necessary” and choosing products suited to your specific hair type, free of harmful ingredients like silicones and waxes, which can lead to buildup rather than cleansing.
Lastly, all experts emphasize the importance of scalp health. Foster reminds, “If your scalp is healthy, then your overall hair is healthy.” Keeping your scalp in good condition is crucial for supporting vibrant, strong hair.
With the right care and habits, you can help manage aging hair, ensuring it stays healthy, strong, and looking its best for years to come.
