The Great Debate: Hair Shedding Or Hair Loss?

by Madonna

Have you ever wondered why those luscious locks on your head seem to have a mind of their own, deciding to bid farewell at the most unexpected times? Ah, hair shedding – that little reminder from our scalp that change is the only constant! At Salon Lusso of Naples, we are constantly matched with the question “Why is there hair covering my shower floor?” Take a deep breath, and read on, this happens to everyone.

What is hair shedding?

Hair shedding is a natural part of the hair growth cycle. It’s normal and healthy to lose 50 to 100 strands of scalp hair a day. Hair grows about 1cm every 28 days. Our hair growth cycle happens in three stages. It begins in the active growth phase, known as the anagen phase. Afterward, it enters the transition phase, known as the catagen phase, and finally, the shedding or resting stage, known as the telogen phase. About 90% of our hair is in the growth phase, and 10% is in the resting/shedding phase at one time. Hence the normal 50 to 100 strands of hair shedding per day. It can take hair three to 10 years to complete a full life cycle.

Hair Shedding VS Hair Loss

When does hair fall cross the line from shedding to loss? Hair loss is a decrease in the amount, or the appearance of the amount, of hair on one’s scalp. Hair loss can result from excessive shedding, hair thinning in diameter, scarring of the scalp, or hair breakage. Hair loss can be gradual or abrupt, depending on the cause. If you feel you have less hair on your scalp than you usually do, schedule an evaluation with your doctor.

Spotting the difference between hair shedding and hair loss can be tricky. Natural hair shedding is consistent. On wash days or when brushing your hair, you should notice approximately the same amount each time. “When you have extended time between wash days you can see more hair shedding as this hair has not fallen while the hair was in its style,” she adds. Potential hair loss causes can include heredity, health, nutrition, stress, medications, and hormones.

How to Combat Hair Shedding

Ensuring the scalp is clean with follicular openings clear of debris, ensures that hair can grow smoothly without impedance. On wash days, give your scalp a gentle brush from roots to ends, removing any debris or product buildup. And once a week treat yourself to a Clarifying Shampoo session, followed by a hydrating conditioner.
