Want hair as luscious as Priyanka Chopra, Alia Bhatt, or Nita Mukesh Ambani? Celebrity hairstylist Amit Thakur shares his thoughts on the age-old remedy of using eggs and curd for a healthy, glamorous mane.
In a recent Instagram post, Thakur discussed the validity of applying curd and eggs to hair. He captioned the post: “DIY masks might give your hair a quick boost, but when it comes to lasting results, it’s all about the right ingredients. Here’s why applying curd and eggs externally isn’t enough and what truly works for your hair health! Disclaimer: Please note that I am not a medical expert, and my insights are based solely on my personal experiences as a hairstylist. For any specific issues or concerns, I recommend consulting a medical professional.”
In the video, Thakur explains that while ingredients like curd and eggs might offer temporary shine and luster, they aren’t long-term solutions. These ingredients coat the hair strands, giving an illusion of healthier hair. However, once the coating washes away, so does the shine.
The Benefits and Drawbacks of the Curd and Eggs Mask
Dr. Sanjay Agarwal, a dermatologist at CMRI Hospital in Kolkata, acknowledges the benefits of these DIY masks, including frizz control, conditioning, and cleansing. However, he also points out the potential drawbacks, such as unpleasant odor and limited shelf life.
“While there’s limited scientific research directly focused on curd and eggs for hair, these ingredients have long been used in traditional medicine for skin and hair benefits,” explains Dr. Agarwal. “Eggs are rich in proteins and fatty acids, which can nourish and strengthen hair. Curd acts as a natural astringent, cleansing and hydrating the hair. Both ingredients can improve texture, enhance shine, and address dryness, though further scientific research is needed to fully validate their effects.”
Cautions to Consider
However, curd and eggs may not be suitable for everyone. Dr. Agarwal notes that individuals with allergies to dairy or eggs may experience scalp irritation, itching, or redness. He recommends performing a patch test before using these DIY masks to ensure they’re safe for your skin.
Furthermore, Dr. Agarwal suggests thoroughly rinsing the scalp after applying the mask to avoid lingering odor and potential irritation. He also cautions against overusing natural masks, as they may cause product buildup. Like any natural component, it’s important to avoid getting curd or egg in your eyes, as they could lead to irritation.
Natural vs. Commercial Products
While celebrity hairstylist Amit Thakur believes in the temporary benefits of DIY masks, Dr. Agarwal argues that curd and eggs offer nourishing properties without the harsh chemicals often found in commercial hair care products. “They’re free from preservatives, sulfates, and parabens, which can irritate sensitive scalps,” says Dr. Agarwal.
However, he also acknowledges that commercial products typically offer faster and more targeted results compared to natural alternatives. Whether you choose to stick to traditional remedies or opt for commercially formulated hair care solutions, understanding what works best for your hair is key to maintaining healthy, shiny locks.
