Study Links Wegovy to Increased Risk of Hair Loss

A new study from the University of British Columbia has raised concerns over a potential side effect of popular weight loss medications, revealing that a key ingredient could increase the risk of hair loss.

Semaglutide, the active component in drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy, has been associated with a higher likelihood of hair loss, according to the study’s findings. Researchers analyzed data from 16 million patients between 2006 and 2020, comparing users of semaglutide-based medications to those using Contrave, a combination of bupropion and naltrexone.

The study’s authors suggest that individuals considering semaglutide exclusively for weight loss should weigh the possibility of hair loss as a potential drawback, particularly women who may be contemplating the drug. “Those considering using semaglutide strictly for weight loss might want to factor in hair loss as a possible limitation of these drugs,” the study cautioned.

While the findings highlight this concern, the researchers emphasized the need for further investigation into the relationship between hair loss and GLP-1 agonists, the class of drugs that includes semaglutide. “The risk-benefit calculus to treatment initiation may differ for individuals with diabetes or morbid obesity, who may be more willing to accept hair loss as a potential side effect, compared to those using semaglutide solely for weight loss,” they explained.

Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer of both Ozempic and Wegovy, responded to the study’s findings by reaffirming its confidence in the safety and efficacy of its GLP-1 medications. A company spokesperson told CNBC that it “remains confident in the benefit-risk profile of our GLP-1 medicines when used as indicated and in accordance with product labeling.” Novo Nordisk also noted that previous studies have acknowledged the risk of hair loss associated with Wegovy.
